Suga wins LDP election, on pace to become Japan's PM

Yoshihide Suga, Japan's chief cabinet secretary, was elected president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Monday, replacing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

As the country's prime minister is elected by MPs, Suga is widely expected to also take over as Japan's head of government following Abe's decision to step down last month.

Considered the outgoing prime minister's right-hand man, Suga will be entitled to serve the remainder of Abe's term but is also expected to call a snap general election next month.
