US bans some Chinese products over 'forced labor'

The United States Department of Homeland Security banned on Monday imports of certain products from China's Xinjiang province due to "forced labor issues."

Among the items that customs agents were instructed to turn away are cotton, hair products, computer components and some textiles. "Today’s Withhold Release Orders send a clear message to the international community that we will not tolerate the illicit, inhumane, and exploitative practices of forced labor in US supply chains," Mark Morgan, acting commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, stated.

Last week, China accused Washington of planning to block imports of cotton and other products with the goal to destabilize the Xinjiang region.
