Suga elected new prime minister of Japan

The Lower House of the Japanese parliament on Wednesday picked Yoshihide Suga (pictured) to serve as the next prime minister of Japan.

Formerly the chief cabinet secretary, Suga will replace the nation's longest-serving head of the government Shinzo Abe, who left his post after experiencing health problems.

Suga was expected to be the next person to take the nation's highest political position as he was recently appointed leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which holds a parliamentary majority.
