2020s must be EU's digital decade - Von der Leyen

The next decade must be the European Union's "digital decade," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday.

Speaking during her State of the Union address, she stressed the bloc needs to concentrate on three things - building a European cloud for personal data management, artificial intelligence regulation, as well as fast networks that will enable better online learning shopping and work from home.

Von der Leyen stressed that the EU needs to be "digitally sovereign" by using the next decade to improve connectivity and develop digital infrastructure. She also noted that the bloc would invest €8 billion in next-generation supercomputers in order to achieve its goals.
