EU to cut carbon emission by 55% till 2030 - Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday the European Union had increased targets for carbon emissions reduction by 2030, from by at least 40% to 55%.

Von der Leyen explained that meeting this target should create new jobs, reduce the region's pollution by half and significantly reduce needs for the import of energy assets. The EU will adjust its policies to accommodate this change, she said.

Furthermore, the Commission's president noted that the EU plans to raise €225 billion through "green" bonds, adding it is of utmost importance for the bloc to establish a circular economy.
