Pompeo: Iran must answer for its barbarity

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a series of tweets on Wednesday that Iran needs to be held responsible for its "barbarity" after executing Navid Afkari. "Democracies around the world have a moral obligation to stand firm and reject this regime's brutality," the secretary of state added.

Pompeo went on to praise the cancellation of Foreign Minister Javid Zarif's international meetings and added "they should not be rescheduled until Iran releases Navid's brothers from prison and returns all wrongfully detained foreigners."

Afkari, a wrestling champion, and his brothers were prosecuted in Iran for protesting against the government in 2018 and allegedly killing an undercover Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) agent. He was sentenced to death and executed on September 12 while his brothers received prison sentences of 54 years and 27 years in relation to the same incident.
