Tikhanovskaya calls for international intervention in Belarus

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya (pictured) urged on Friday the international community to intervene in Belarus to prevent further human rights violations by President Alexander Lukashenko's regime.

"The situation in Belarus requires immediate international attention. Peaceful protesters were illegally detained, beaten, raped, some of the protesters died," she stressed in a video message at the 45th session of the UN Human Rights Council ( HRC).

Previously, Tikhanovskaya won 10.12% of votes in the Belarusian presidential election that was held in August. Following Lukahshenko's electoral victory, she fled the country to Lithuania while citizens gathered in several cities across Belarus to voice their dissatisfaction with election results.
