UK could face 50K daily COVID cases within weeks - expert

The number of daily coronavirus infections could reach 50,000 in the United Kingdom "in the middle of October" if the surge in COVID-19 cases continues at the current pace, UK government's Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance (pictured) claimed on Monday. Fatalities caused by the virus could top 200 on a daily basis in November if the country fails to avoid the second wave of the pandemic, according to him.

Speaking in a televised press conference, the expert noted that the "vast majority" of British residents are currently "susceptible" to the virus, adding the pandemic is "roughly doubling" in the UK every week.

"The challenge therefore is to make sure the doubling time does not stay at seven days. That requires speed, it requires action and it requires enough in order to be able to bring that down," Sir Patrick Vallance underscored.
