Microsoft to launch Azure Orbital cloud service

Microsoft Inc. announced at its Ignite conference on Tuesday that its cloud service provider Azure Orbital would offer services of satellite connectivity after it launches, adding that customers who will be granted access to this service would be selected through a "private preview."

"With access to low-latency global fiber networks and the global scale of Microsoft's cloud services, customers can innovate quickly with large satellite datasets," Principal Product Manager Yves Pitsch explained in a blog post. Pitsch added that several satellite companies have already signed contracts with Azure Orbital, including Amergint, Kratos, Kongsberg, Satellite Services and Viasat.

Earlier in September, the company filed with the Federal Communications Commission for approval of the project.
