Starmer urges Johnson to extend furlough scheme

Leader of the Opposition in the United Kingdom Sir Keir Starmer urged on Wednesday Prime Minister Boris Johnson to extend the job retention scheme and protect firms and workers amid growing figures in coronavirus cases.

Starmer stressed the government's support is needed now, "particularly in the light of restrictions announced yesterday," and after "one of the major job suppliers in hospitality service," Whitbread stated it would cut 6,000 posts.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said he did not believe Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak did not plan to extend the job retention scheme past October.
