US initial jobless claims up by 4,000 to 870,000

The number of initial jobless claims in the United States went up by 4,000 in the week ending September 19 from the previous week's revised figure to land at 870,000, missing analysts' expectations, the US Labor Department said on Thursday.

The 4-week moving average slipped by 35,250 from the previous week's revised average to arrive at 878,250.

The seasonally adjusted insured unemployment stood at 12,580,000 during the week ending September 12, declining by 167,000 compared to the week prior. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was at 8.6% for the same week, diminishing by 0.1 percentage point from the previous week's revised rate.
