Italy considering extending emergency till January - reports

The Italian government is considering extending the state of emergency amid the coronavirus pandemic until January 31, newspapers Il Messagero and Corriere della Sera reported on Thursday.

The sources told the dailies the extension of the current measures was being contemplated due to new spikes in COVID-19 infections nationally and globally. Rome introduced the nationwide six-month state of emergency in January and later prolonged it in July until the end of October.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte recently claimed the country would see another general lockdown to contain the pandemic and that the government would turn to other restrictions instead.
