Spain's regions call for night-time curfew

Presidents of the Spanish autonomous communities of Castilla y Leon and Valencia, Alfonso Fernandez Manueco and Ximo Puig, confirmed on Friday they had asked the country's Health Minister Salvador Illa to impose a night-time curfew to curb further spread of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Madrid, which previously rejected introducing a lockdown, ordered closing all bars, restaurants, cinemas, and theatres between midnight and 6 am, starting from Saturday.

Earlier this week, Spain became the first country in the European Union to surpass 1 million infections from COVID-19. Health Minister Salvador Illa subsequently warned the government would need to impose more drastic measures of prevention if the current ones fail to curb the spread of the virus. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will address the nation regarding the situation later in the day.
