Tesla reports progress in safety of autopilot system

Tesla Inc. revealed a slight improvement in the performance of its autopilot system in its Vehicle Safety Report for the third quarter of 2020, released on Monday.

"In the 3rd quarter, we registered one accident for every 4.59 million miles driven in which drivers had Autopilot engaged. For those driving without Autopilot but with our active safety features, we registered one accident for every 2.42 million miles driven. [...] By comparison, NHTSA's [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] most recent data shows that in the United States there is an automobile crash every 479,000 miles," the company's statement read.

Back in 2019, it was reported Tesla's autopilot system was involved in a car crash in Florida that killed the driver who activated it. Later, a court in Munich ruled the company had used "misleading" language in its advertisements in Germany regarding autonomous driving and autopilot systems. More recently, Tesla's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk revealed the carmaker planned to release a new version of the Autopilot in about a month.
