Spain to extend state of emergency by six months

The Parliament of Spain voted on Thursday in favor of extending a nationwide state of emergency, introduced amid new spikes in infections from COVID-19, by another six months until May 9, 2021.

The decision was passed with 155 votes in favor, 53 against, and 99 abstentions. The extension to the state of emergency will give local governments more power and independence on what moves they will make to curb new rises in coronavirus cases on a regional level.

Earlier this week, the government proposed in its plan for the budget for 2021 that €1.01 billion be allocated for a vaccine against COVID-19. As of Wednesday, Spain counts a total of 1,136,503 cases and 35,466 coronavirus-related deaths.
