France sees near-record 47,637 COVID-19 cases

France registered near-record 47,637 new COVID-19 cases and 235 coronavirus-related deaths over the previous day, the government's data showed on Thursday.

However, there were 214 fewer people hospitalized after contracting the disease. The number of patients in intensive care slightly increased, as a total of 111 people entered the ICU during the last 24 hours. With the latest update, the total tally stands at 1.28 million positive cases and over 36,000 fatalities.

Forecasts for the future are worsening, as Prime Minister Jean Castex previously revealed there would likely be more COVID-19 patients in hospitals than during the spring. Meanwhile, the government's advisor Jean-Francois Delfraissy warned the restriction measures wouldn't be lifted probably until the end of the year.
