Russia: Open Skies Treaty must be respected after US exit

The Open Skies Treaty needs to be respected despite the exit of the United States from the international agreement, Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The ministry stressed Moscow is concerned that US allies staying in the deal will provide it with information about Russian territory, but that they will ban Russia from flying over US bases in Europe.

"Of course, this is unacceptable for Russia. We will seek firm guarantees that the states remaining in the Open Skies Treaty will fulfil their obligations, firstly, on ensuring the possibility of observing their entire territory and, secondly, on ensuring that the materials of observation flights are not transferred to third countries that are not participants in the treaty," Russia stated.

Washington formally left the Open Skies Treaty on November 22, but Congress Democrat said the move made by President Donald Trump may have been illegal.
