EU strikes deal with Moderna for 160M vaccine doses

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday an agreement with Moderna for the supply of its coronavirus vaccine candidate of up to 160 million doses. She stated that this is the sixth such contract the European Union has concluded with a pharmaceutical company, and that another one is being negotiated, "setting up one of the most comprehensive COVID-19 portfolios in the world."

Von der Leyen assured that all the vaccines will be evaluated "very carefully" by the European Medicines Agency and "only authorized and placed on the market if they are safe and effective." She also stressed the EU's commitment to funding the distribution of coronavirus vaccines in low-income countries, including a donation of close to €800 million to the COVAX facility.
