Blocking EU budget not solving rule of law issue - Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Wednesday that Hungary and Poland's decision to veto the European Union's 2021–27 budget was not an appropriate response to their concerns of the alleged violations of the rule of law.

"It is very difficult to imagine anybody in Europe who would possibly have anything against that principle," she said. "Anyone still in doubt has a clear path. They can go to the European Court of Justice and allow the new rules to be tested there."

The commission previously stressed the bloc must reach an agreement on the budget under the German presidency, which ends on December 31. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas later said Berlin expected the issue would be solved within days.
