US withdraws half of its diplomats from Iraq - report

The United States is pulling half of its diplomats from the US Embassy in Iraq due to tensions with neighboring Iran, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing two unnamed US officials. The withdrawal is seen as temporary, but the exact timing of the diplomats' return is not yet known.

Besides the unsolved killing of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh last week, the US is reportedly concerned with the first anniversary of the death of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force Qassem Soleimani by the hands of the US military that is coming up in a month.

Earlier in the day, a senior US administration official told CNN that Israel orchestrated the killing of Fakhrizadeh, but did not reveal if Israeli agencies had shared the information about its intentions with Washington before the murder took place.
