Wall Street opens lower on initial jobless claims jump

Trading on Wall Street kicked off with losses on Thursday after it was reported that the number of initial jobless claims in the country stood at 853,000 in the week ending December 5, surging by 137,000 from the previous week's revised level. Traders are also monitoring stimulus talks. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin came out in favor of a one-time aid of $600 to most Americans.

The Dow Jones opened 0.12% lower with American Express Co. slipping by 1.29%. The S&P 500 was down 0.52% following the opening bell as Schlumberger Ltd. plunged 3.34%. The Nasdaq 100 declined 0.78% at the open. Tesla was the worst performer falling by 5.45%.

The euro gained 0.19% against the dollar at 9:28 am ET, buying 1.21021.
