Merkel announces stricter COVID-19 restrictions

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Sunday that stricter measures aimed at tackling the spread of COVID-19 in the country will take effect on Wednesday, December 16.

At a press conference held after the meeting of the federal and the state governments, Merkel noted that the current state of affairs needs to be addressed, as the pandemic's second wave threatens to overwhelm the German health system. According to the new measures, most of the shops will be closed come Wednesday, along with schools and daycare centers.

A report by N-tv emerged earlier today, announcing that Berlin might reach for tougher lockdowns in order to get the virus spread back under control.
