Von der Leyen: Brexit negotiations will continue

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asserted on Sunday that the negotiations between the EU and the United Kingdom will go on in Brussels, despite the fact that the deadlines have "been breached over and over again."

"We have mandated our negotiators to continue the talks and to see whether an agreement can, even at this late stage, be reached," she said during a press conference held after a phone call with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

UK Foreign Minister Dominic Raab noted earlier in the day that the reason for the lack of progress in the talks is the bloc's fear of London gaining "competitive advantage" in regards to trade, while the Spanish foreign affairs minister reiterated that a no-deal scenario would make an already challenging situation, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, worse.
