UK unemployment up to 4.9% in quarter to October

The United Kingdom's unemployment rate in the three months to October stood at 4.9%, the Office for National Statistics reported on Tuesday. The rate was 1.2% higher compared to the prior year and 0.7% versus the last quarter.

The employment rate was estimated at 75.2%, a 0.9% decrease per annum and 0.5% lower quarter-on-quarter. The claimant count rose 2.5% month-on-month to 2.7 million in November.

In nominal terms, the rate of annual pay growth stood at 2.7% for total pay and at 2.8% for regular pay in the August-to-October quarter. In the same timeframe, the estimated economic inactivity rate was down by 0.1 percentage points annually and was unchanged on a quarterly basis, landing at 20.8%. Meanwhile, the number of vacancies reached 547,000 in the three months to November, jumping 110,000 compared to the previous quarter.
