Biden: We must deter cyberattacks

United States President-elect Joe Biden said on Thursday in a statement that his administration will work on increasing cybersecurity in the US but added that Washington must also "deter" its "adversaries" from attempting to target the US with cyberattacks.

"We will do that by, among other things, imposing substantial costs on those responsible for such malicious attacks, including in coordination with our allies and partners. Our adversaries should know that, as President, I will not stand idly by in the face of cyber assault on our nation," Biden said. Noting that he recently learned that there had been a "massive cybersecurity breach" which may have affected government, companies and private citizens, Biden said the attack is a topic of "great concern." However, he did not go on to comment on who may have been behind the alleged attack.

The comments come after Google's services were unavailable globally for hours for unspecified reasons.
