UK detects another new COVID strain - Hancock

The United Kingdom has registered two cases of another new coronavirus variant, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock (pictured) announced on Wednesday. The new infections were linked to South Africa as both cases "are contacts of people who have traveled from South Africa in the past few weeks," the secretary noted.

Speaking at a presser in London, Hancock said the strain "is yet more transmittable and it mutated further than the new variant previously discovered in the UK."

The British government decided to place "immediate restrictions" on travel from South Africa, adding that people who have been arriving from that country recently will be ordered to quarantine immediately. "These measures are temporary while we investigate further this new strain," the secretary underscored.
