US markets end mixed ahead of holidays

Major stock markets in the United States ended mixed on Wednesday ahead of the Christmas holidays which will see a shorter trading day on Thursday while exchanges will be closed on Christmas Day. Shortly before the closing bell, US President Donald Trump vetoed the $740 billion defense bill that passed Congress. Meanwhile, the focus stayed on Europe as the United Kingdom and the European Union are said to be finalizing their post-Brexit trade deal.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.38% higher as Goldman Sachs led the gains, increasing 2.58% The Nasdaq 100 lost 0.51% as Zoom fell 6.14% amid COVID-19 vaccine optimism. The S&P 500 finished 0.07% in the green. The index was tipped higher by Diamondback energy which jumped 8.51%.

The euro was flat against the dollar, going for 1.21934 at 4:01 pm ET.
