House passes bill for $2,000 stimulus checks

United States House of Representatives approved a bill that calls for the increase of the second round of one-time direct payments to Americans from $600 to $2,000.

The stand-alone legislation was forwarded to the Republican-controlled Senate with a 275-134 vote.

The efforts to up the sum were initiated once President Donald Trump refused to sign the annual spending package brought before his desk, criticizing, amongst other items, the fact that not enough money was offered to citizens through direct payments. The head of state later inked the bill anyway but noted he still wants several sections of the law amended.
