US opens higher, kicks off 2021 with fresh records

Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States started the year's first trading session with gains on Monday after a strong finish of the previous year's final session which saw two major benchmarks at record highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq 100 all kicked off the trading session with fresh records.

The investors will closely monitor the developments regarding the US presidential elections after 11 Republican senators announced their plan to contest the Electoral College's results later this week. On the data front, the traders will keep an eye on the report on the manufacturing activity in December, as well as the construction spending report for the month prior, both scheduled for release later in the day.

The Dow Jones jumped 0.21% or 67 points at the open. At the opening bell, the S&P 500 advanced by 0.36%. DXC Technology was the best performer on both indices, surging 5.23% at 9:30 am ET. The Nasdaq 100 grew by 0.46% as the session started with ASML Holding rising 2.53% a minute later. The euro strengthened 0.74% versus the dollar, selling for 1.23069 at 9:29 am ET.
