UK's Johnson announces nationwide lockdown

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson (pictured) revealed on Monday that England will enter a nation-wide lockdown aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus, which means that, starting tomorrow, people in England will be allowed to leave the house only to "shop for essentials," work, if working from home is impossible, exercise, and "seek medical assistance." Primary and secondary schools will close immediately as well.

"Our hospitals are under more pressure now than they have ever been since the start of the pandemic," Johnson said and added that "more needs to be done" to get the spread of the new COVID strain under control.

Earlier today, the United Kingdom government moved the COVID alert gauge from the current level 4 to level 5, the highest that it goes, meaning that "the number of cases is rising and there is a risk of healthcare services being overwhelmed."
