US opens higher after Powell's speech

Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States traded above the flatline as the session started on Thursday, with the traders digesting comments delivered the day before by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. His stance, steadfastly in favor of more stimulative measures, fueled hopes among the investors that the COVID-19 relief could arrive in the near future.

On the data front, the number of initial jobless claims in the US fell by almost 20,000 during the past week compared to the week before.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.12% as the session started, but extended gains to set a fresh record high minutes into the trading bout. was the top performer on the index. The Nasdaq 100 jumped 0.53% at the same time, with Micron Technology up by 2.68%. Concurrently, the S&P 500 moved up by 0.28% as Zebra Technologies soared 10.05% three minutes after the opening bell. The euro advanced by 0.14% versus the dollar, selling for 1.21371 at 9:28 am ET.
