House panel chair sues Trump over riots

United States House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (pictured) filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday against former President Donald Trump and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani over their alleged roles in the January 6 riots at the Capitol.

The lawsuit, which also names right-wing groups the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers as defendants, has been filed under The Enforcement Act of 1871, also known as the Ku Klux Klan Act.

According to the lawsuit, Trump's Save America rally and the subsequent "storming of the Capitol" served as "the intended and foreseeable culmination of a carefully coordinated campaign to interfere with" the congressional confirmation of President Joe Biden's win in the presidential election.
