Suu Kyi facing one more criminal charge, lawyer says

Lawyer of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi, Min Min Soe, revealed on Monday that the former leader was presented with a new criminal charge during a virtual hearing.

The new charge accuses Suu Kyi, who was ousted in a military coup earlier this year, of spreading information that "caused fear or alarm" and is based on a law from Myanmar's colonial era. Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, showed up in court via video link and looked healthy, the lawyer added. Suu Kyi remains under house arrest and her next hearing will take place on March 15. She was previously charged with breaking coronavirus-related measures and possessing unregistered walkie-talkies.

In February, the military seized power in Myanmar in a move that was strongly criticized by the United States and the United Kingdom. Pro-Suu Kyi protesters have been taking to the streets since the coup which was organized by the military after officers claimed there was voter fraud in the November 2020 election in Myanmar.
