21 states sue Biden over Keystone XL oil pipeline

Twenty-one states have filed a lawsuit against United States President Joe Biden and a number of other administration officials over Biden's decision to rescind the Keystone XL oil pipeline. The project was previously approved by former President Donald Trump in 2019, before Biden issued an executive order to revoke the permission upon taking office.

Led by Montana and Texas, the lawsuit alleges that Biden does not have the legal power to stop the pipeline, stating that it is up to Congress to regulate such matters. The president argued that the pipeline would "undermine US climate leadership by undercutting the credibility and influence of the United States in urging other countries to take ambitious climate action." Meanwhile, the lawsuit claims that the US government "repeatedly concluded that the pipeline would have a negligible impact on the climate but significant impact on the economy and American energy independence."
