Renesas to halt chip production for 3 months - report

Renesas Electronics Corp. could take up to 3 months to restore its semiconductor production after the fire that occurred in its factory in Japan on Friday, the Nikkei reported.

Company CEO Hidetoshi Shibata estimated earlier that the time needed for the production to continue could be up to a month, while Nikkei's sources explained that a longer period could prove to be necessary due to "many processes in semiconductor fabrication."

The supply of semiconductor chips for the automobile industry has been hit amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has since forced countries like the United States, France, and China to take steps in order to circumvent the problem.
