US to appoint new envoy to halt Nord Stream 2 - report

The United States President Joe Biden's administration is looking to appoint a special envoy to lead negotiations to stop the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing anonymous current and former US officials.

The person most likely to be tapped for the role is Amos Hochstein as he was informally offered the position by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan last month. Hochstein served as international energy affairs coordinator under former President Barack Obama.

The move indicates a new strategy from the White House, as before it relied on European affairs experts and State Department diplomats. The US intends to halt the operations on the pipeline, which is 96% completed, to strip Russia of geopolitical and financial benefits provided by Nord Stream 2.
