Coveney: Northern Ireland riots must stop

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney urged on Thursday the end of the riots currently taking place in Northern Ireland "before somebody is killed or seriously injured."

Coveney told RTE the clashes between the so-called loyalists to the United Kingdom and nationalists were the "scenes we haven't seen in Northern Ireland for a very long time, [...] that many people thought were consigned to history, and I think there needs to be a collective effort to try to diffuse tension."

The riots in the region came in response to Britain and the European Union failing to settle their disagreements over the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. More recently, the bloc started a "formal infringement process" against London for its unilateral decision to extend a grace period for some checks on goods going to Northern Ireland.
