Northern Ireland govt condemns Brexit riots

The Northern Ireland Executive condemned on Thursday the protests currently taking place in Belfast and Derry as "deplorable," "unacceptable," and "unjustifiable" and called for their urgent end.

"While our political positions are very different on many issues, we are all united in our support for law and order and we collectively state our support for policing and for the police officers who have been putting themselves in harm’s way to protect others," the multipartisan body stated.

The riots emerged as a response to the United Kingdom and the European Union's dispute over the North Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. More recently, the bloc began a "formal infringement process" against Britain over the latter's unilateral decision to extend a grace period for some checks on goods going to Northern Ireland.
