Germany to offer Moderna, BioNTech jabs after first AZ dose

The Standing Committee on Vaccination at the Robert Koch Institute (STIKO) said on Thursday that people younger than 60 who have received the first dose of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine should be inoculated with the second dose of Moderna or BioNTech jab.

The STIKO originally announced the decision last week, although without naming the alternative jabs that will be offered to vaccinated people instead of the second dose of AstraZeneca. The news comes a day after the European Medicines Agency confirmed it found a possible link between AstraZeneca's vaccine and the cases of rare blood clots.

Several European countries also imposed restrictions on the use of AstraZeneca's jab only to younger populations over the same concerns following the EMA's announcement, including Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and France.
