Suga, Biden discuss China's 'influence' in region

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that he discussed "China's influence" over the Indo-Pacific region as he met with United States President Joe Biden at the White House.

"We will oppose any attempts to change the status quo in the East and South China seas," Suga told reporters in the Rose Garden. However, he noted that they agreed on the necessity for "each of us to engage in dialogue with China and to pursue stability of international relations" during the meeting.

Other topics discussed during the first in-person bilateral meeting between the two leaders include the importance of Japan's alliance with the US, particularly amid the coronavirus crisis, and North Korea, according to Suga.
