Macron calls for US, EU vaccine cooperation

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Sunday for cooperation between the European Union and the United States on the manufacture and distribution of coronavirus vaccines. He added the EU is "catching up" with the US in terms of vaccine rollout and that it is accelerating production.

In an interview with CBS News, Macron stated cooperation could focus on the possible booster shots in the coming years, as well as on producing vaccines for poorer nations. He also rejected the notion that France could buy the Russian Sputnik V shot. "If there is no recognition of a vaccine by our European sanitary authorities, there is no way to use this vaccine on our soil, and at this stage, the Russian vaccine is not recognized by our authorities." He added that it will take time for Sputnik V to be authorized and made in the EU, and that it would be more efficient to increase production of already approved shots.
