S. Korea will not protest Fukushima water dump if in line with IAEA rules

South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong said on Monday that Seoul "has no particular reason to object" to Japan's plan to release contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean if the process follows guidelines set out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). South Korea and China previously condemned Japan's decision.

Chung stated Japan should provide transparent scientific information about the water dump, have sufficient consultations prior to starting the process, and agree to South Korea's participation in IAEA's safety verification process, according to Yonhap. "Rather than opposing the plan (outright), Seoul is relentlessly and consistently requesting Japan (accept) those three things, while putting our top priority on (safeguarding) the health and safety of our people," Chung said at a parliamentary session.
