EU orders another 100 million Pfizer shot doses

The European Union decided on Monday to exercise an option under an existing agreement with Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE to purchase another 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine in 2021. The total number of doses the two companies will deliver this year now stands at 600 million, covering two-thirds of the EU population, they said in a statement.

"We remain committed to moving as quickly and safely as possible to bring this vaccine to more people in Europe, as the deadly virus continues to wreak havoc across the continent," said Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. "To date, we have met all of our supply commitments to the European Commission and we plan to deliver 250 million doses to the European Union in Q2, a four-fold increase on Q1's agreed quantity."
