Johnson welcomes English clubs quitting ESL

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson described on Tuesday the English Premier League (EPL) clubs' decision to quit the European Super League as the "right result for football fans, "the right result for [association] football fans, clubs, and communities across the country."

"We must continue to protect our cherished national game," he tweeted. Johnson previously labeled the proposed competition as a "cartel" and threatened with governmental "legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped."

The European Super League Company, S.L.'s decision to create a new competition that will feature 12 elite clubs from the continent drew criticism from football players, managers, and fans. After the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) said the footballers that play in it will not be able to take part in the World Cup and the European Championship, the six English clubs that were supposed to participate in it reversed their decision.
