Tesla's autopilot will drive with empty driver's seat - report

Consumer Reports non-profit organization reported on Thursday that it tested Tesla's Model Y electric vehicle and found out that with the autopilot mode on, the car did not detect that there was no human in the driver's seat. With no driver behind the wheel, the driver assistance feature drove the car without any alarms going off.

"In our evaluation, the system not only failed to make sure the driver was paying attention, but it also couldn't tell if there was a driver there at all. Tesla is falling behind other automakers like GM and Ford that, on models with advanced driver assist systems, use technology to make sure the driver is looking at the road," the Consumer Reports director stated.

The test results come as federal and local authorities investigate a Tesla car crash in Texas last Saturday, where the electric vehicle hit a tree and caught on fire, taking away the lives of two passengers, but police found no evidence of a driver being behind the wheel.
