Suga declares state of emergency in Tokyo, 3 other areas

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga (pictured) declared on Friday a state of emergency in Tokyo and three western prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo, amid COVID-19 fears.

The move is meant to help curb the ongoing coronavirus surge during the Golden Week holidays. The tougher restrictions include asking bars and restaurants not to serve alcohol and shutting down major commercial facilities, such as shopping malls. Furthermore, large sporting events are to be held without spectators. The restrictions are planned to last until May 11.

Suga stated that the government "must take strong measures in a focused manner," as the emergency declaration covers a quarter of Japan's population and a third of its economy three months before the Olympics.
