Brazil decides against approving Sputnik V jab

The Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) announced it has decided not to authorize the use of Russia's Gamaleya Research Institute's vaccine against COVID-19, Sputnik V, in that country.

"One of the critical moments, to which we drew attention, is that the vaccine contains adenovirus, which can reproduce. So, the virus, which should be used only as a tool of delivering genetic material to human cells, by forming an immune response, reproduces itself," Medicines and Biological Products General Manager Gustavo Mendes Lima Santos explained the agency's decision.

Anvisa's comments come shortly after German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated the data the Russian Direct Investments Fund (RDIF) provided on Sputnik V is still insufficient to have that vaccine approved in the European Union.
