Global electric car count to reach 230M by 2030 - IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed on Thursday that analysts expect up to 145 million electric vehicles to run globally by 2030, but if the governments ramp up their efforts in fighting against climate change, the number of electric cars could increase to 230 million.

The Paris-based institution also noted that in 2020, despite the pandemic crisis and a severe 16% drop in car sales, the number of purchased electric vehicles grew by 41% compared to 2019 and amounted to about 3 million units.

"While they can't do the job alone, electric vehicles have an indispensable role to play in reaching net-zero emissions worldwide," IEA's executive, Fatih Birol, stated.
