Dow hits record high as US outbreak diminishes

Major stock markets in the United States extended gains on Wednesday led by the Dow Jones which surged more than 150 points to hit a new record high.

The latest data from Johns Hopkins University showed a further decline in newly registered COVID-19 cases across the US, while on the vaccine front, Canada became the first country to approve the emergency use of the Pfizer/BioNTech jab among children aged between 12 and 16 years. The positive sentiment was also pushed by the news that service sector activity in the US expanded at a record pace last month.

The Dow soared 0.45% or 156 points at 12:00 pm ET, while the Nasdaq 100 climbed 0.70%. The S&P 500 rose 0.54%. The euro lost 0.10% against the dollar to trade for 1.20018 a minute later.
