UK to send two ships to Jersey amid fishing clash with France

The United Kingdom will send two Royal Navy ships to the island of Jersey near the French coast as the UK and France entered a dispute about post-Brexit fishing rights in the English Channel. The British government said the vessels, one of which is a warship, will be deployed to the island, a British Crown dependency, as a "strictly precautionary measure."

The disagreement started when French fishermen complained that the UK is abruptly changing rules on fishing licenses. This led to French Maritime Minister Annick Girardin threatening to cut off Jersey's electricity supply, most of which is provided via France. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson "stressed the urgent need for a de-escalation in tensions and for dialogue between Jersey and France on fishing access" and vowed to continue working on the issue with the Jersey government.
